Abstract

Recognizing and explaining Quranic concepts in a systematic manner is a topic that has attracted the attention of many researchers in the field of religious texts, especially Quranic studies. In this regard, the present study has attempted to apply Fairclough's theory of critical discourse analysis to the analysis of the verses of Surah Al-Baqarah to examine the concept of faith and the indicators of faith in these verses. Since the Holy Quran is considered a supreme example of rhetoric and eloquence, the manifestations of these indicators have crystallized in the linguistic structure of the verses and in various types of lexical and syntactic relations, as well as semantic values and expressive forms. This research aims to explain the divine discourse on this matter and also to answer the question of how analyzing these verses based on Fairclough's theory can lead to expanding and deepening the level of semantic interpretation and coherence of the concept of faith in the verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, the largest and second Surah of the Holy Quran. The findings of the research, which were conducted with a qualitative approach and in a descriptive-analytical manner and by applying the level of description of Fairclough's model, show that the word faith in these verses is used in a series of relationships such as semantic order, congruence, semantic inclusion, synonymy, and semantic contrast and contradiction with other concepts; a significant part of the current processes is in the form of adverbs, and the most prominent images are expressed through contrasting similes. In addition, in the external context, various coherence elements such as repetition, reference, connection, and deletion are seen. The results of the research indicate that applying the verses under study to the Fairclough model can expand the level of interpretation and strengthen the semantic coherence of these verses regarding the concept of faith.
