Abstract

Objective: The poetry attributed to Imam Reza (A.S.), like many religious and literary texts, constitutes part of the Islamic spiritual and cultural heritage and contains ethical, mystical, and social themes. By emphasizing concepts such as patience, tolerance, chastity, self-dignity, and avoidance of arrogance, these poems occupy a significant place in religious literature. Since these poems are worthy of examination not only in terms of their spiritual content but also with regard to their structure, order, and poetic form, the present study aims to analyze the poetry of Imam Reza (A.S.) semiotically on the basis of Ferdinand de Saussure’s theory. The main objective of the study is to uncover the semantic system of these poems and to examine the relationship between signifiers and signifieds in representing ethical, social, and religious concepts.
Methodology: This study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach and is based on Saussure’s theory of semiotics. Within this framework, poetry is examined as a text composed of a semiotic system, and its linguistic, semantic, and structural layers are analyzed. In order to identify the semantic system of the poems, the study focuses on the relationships between signifier and signified, syntagmatic and paradigmatic axes, binary oppositions, lexical repetitions, linguistic imagery, and phonetic elements.
Results: The findings of the study indicate that the poems attributed to Imam Reza (A.S.), in terms of linguistic structure and poetic form, correspond to the characteristics of poetry from the middle Abbasid period. Despite their linguistic simplicity, they possess deep semantic layers. In these poems, precise relationships between signifiers and signifieds provide the ground for conveying concepts such as patience, chastity, self-dignity, avoidance of arrogance, and reflection on ethical values. Furthermore, the use of semantic oppositions, purposeful syntagmatic arrangement of words, linguistic images appropriate to ethical themes, and phonetic musicality has created a coherent structure for producing and reinforcing meaning.
Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, the poems of Imam Reza (A.S.) can be regarded as religious-literary texts in which meaning is formed through a coherent system of signs. By relying on the relationship between signifier and signified, binary oppositions, repetition, phonetic musicality, and the artistic arrangement of words, these poems have been able to convey ethical and social concepts to the audience in a simple, effective, and multilayered manner. Therefore, the semiotic approach can provide a new perspective for understanding the semantic structure and literary capacities of the poems attributed to Imam Reza (A.S.).
