The study of Imam Husayn’s timeless uprising within contemporary literary works, particularly in the dramatic genre, continually illustrates a discourse that, as a transformative historical event, embodies profound human and spiritual ideals. This discourse resounds with calls for justice and truth, conveying the essence of this grand, divinely inspired movement to the world. This article, employing an analytical-descriptive approach based on Fairclough's critical discourse theory across the dimensions of description, interpretation, and explanation, seeks to uncover the depth of Ashura's discourse within ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Sharqāwī’s play, Al-Husayn: The Revolutionary and Martyr, written in response to the Arab world’s shifting political landscape after Gamal Abdel Nasser’s defeat. The play is examined as a representation of the discourse of resistance in modern Arab culture, providing a platform to explore its social, cultural, ideological, and intertextual-religious themes. Findings indicate that at the descriptive level, the playwright uses linguistic and rhetorical elements reflecting the event’s spirit, highlighting its spiritual and emotional impact in a transhistorical frame. At the interpretive level, the play resonates with intertextual elements, including the Qur’an and other religious texts, conveying the spirit of social awakening and resistance against oppression. At the explanatory level, the playwright critiques contemporary oppression, reflecting a need to revive human and revolutionary values in his time.
