One of the key methods of contemplation in the Holy Qur’an is the semantic analysis of its words and expressions. Through semantic study, one can uncover the roots of words and gain insight into the philosophical arrangement of terms within Qur’anic verses. Consequently, scholars in Qur’anic studies often begin their interpretation and analysis by exploring the semantics and etymology of Qur’anic vocabulary to unveil the deeper meanings and intricate structures of the text. This descriptive-analytical study first defines semantics, syntagmatic, and paradigmatic relations, and then applies these concepts to examine the term sajdah (prostration) and its co-occurring words. By analyzing various verses—such as verse 15 of Surah Sajdah, verse 100 of Surah Yusuf, and verse 113 of Surah Al-Imran—as well as instances of innate, voluntary, and symbolic prostration, the study demonstrates that the term sajdah possesses profound semantic richness. Its deliberate selection over similar terms like obedience, worship, humility, or bowing reflects purposeful and meaningful usage. The syntagmatic analyses further reveal that sajdah frequently appears alongside concepts such as faith, recitation, glorification, and the renunciation of arrogance, thereby playing a pivotal role in portraying servitude and submission in the Qur’anic discourse.
