Dialogue is one of the fundamental components of narrative discourse, playing a crucial role in the construction and transmission of meaning. Grice’s Cooperative Principle, with its four maxims of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner, provides an influential pragmatic framework for explaining both explicit and implicit meanings in communication. This study aims to examine the dialogues found in the story of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) in Surahs Al-A‘raf, Al-Qasas, and Al-Kahf through the lens of Grice’s Cooperative Principle, with particular emphasis on the semantic and pragmatic implications of maxim violations. Employing a descriptive-analytical method, the research analyzes sixty-two Qur’anic verses distributed across Surah Al-A‘raf (22 verses), Surah Al-Kahf (17 verses) Surah and Al-Qasas (23 verses). The findings reveal that the violations of conversational maxims in these dialogues are not arbitrary departures from communicative norms; rather, they are intentional and functionally motivated strategies designed to generate deeper layers of meaning. Such violations contribute to the portrayal of characters’ psychological and intellectual traits, enhance the persuasive and rhetorical dimensions of discourse, direct readers toward implied meanings, and support the development of narrative structure. Furthermore, they play a significant role in shaping the audience’s mental image of both speakers and addressees. The study concludes that the dialogues in the Qur’anic story of Prophet Moses are governed by a highly sophisticated communicative system in which linguistic structure and semantic function interact to produce rich pragmatic and literary effects.
