Abstract:
This study, relying on Roman Jakobson’s communication model and its six primary functions, analyzes the language and communicative structure of Letter 31 in Nahj al-Balagha to demonstrate how Imam Ali (AS) employs language not only as a medium for conveying messages but also as a tool for education and guidance. The research method is descriptive-analytical, focusing on Jakobson’s linguistic approach. The text of the letter is divided into semantic and grammatical units, after which the sentences are categorized and analyzed within the framework of Jakobson’s six functions. The findings reveal that, due to the nature and purpose of the letter, certain functions occur with higher frequency, while others appear less often. The qualitative analysis further indicates that Imam Ali (AS), by simultaneously activating these functions, constructs a multilayered textual structure in which language assumes educational, epistemic, and aesthetic roles. Ultimately, the study shows that in this letter, language is not merely a communicative tool but also a reflection of Imam Ali’s intellectual framework and pedagogical system.
