The sermon of Hazrat Zainab (PBUH) in Damascus, as a discursive text, provides a suitable framework for examining the linguistic and semantic components of resistance. The necessity of studying this sermon arises from the fact that, when approached as a political discourse, it offers the possibility of understanding the process of redefining the boundaries of power and legitimacy within conditions of repression. The purpose of the present study is to analyze the discursive mechanisms of the sermon within the theoretical framework of Laclau and Mouffe, in order to demonstrate how this text was able to articulate the discourse of resistance. To this end, the study employs a descriptive–analytical method and applies key concepts such as “central signifier,” “floating signifier,” “empty signifier,” “discursive antagonism,” “exclusion,” “otherness,” “articulation,” “chain of equivalence,” “mythical construction,” and “hegemony” to conduct a qualitative discursive analysis of the sermon’s content. The findings indicate that this sermon, by overturning the legitimizing signifiers of the caliphate and reconstructing a discourse grounded in “dignity,” “justice,” “martyrdom,” and “divine authority,” not only disrupted the coherence of Yazid’s hegemonic discourse but also transformed from a declarative statement of belief into a paradigmatic model of discursive action—namely, “resistance”—within the religious community.
Keywords: Discourse analysis, hegemony, resistance, Hazrat Zaynab's (PBUH) sermon.
