Deixis is a term in linguistic pragmatics encompassing personal, temporal, spatial, discourse, and social categories, serving as a vital link between a text and its external context. Pragmatics, by definition, examines language in its context of use; thus, meaning is not derived solely from the text itself, nor is it limited to the speaker or listener. Rather, extratextual factors—including social and cultural context—play a crucial role in uncovering the meaning embedded in the communicative process between the speaker and the listener through the text. Given the profound connection between Divine Speech and its context, readers must often look beyond the text and acquire information regarding the Asbab al-Nuzul (occasions of revelation) to grasp the intended meaning of the verses. In translating the Quran, translators have adopted diverse approaches ranging from rigid fidelity to the text to prioritizing the transmission of the full concept to the reader. Some translators incorporate extratextual and contextual information directly into their translations. This study employs a descriptive-analytical method to investigate how these terms are rendered in contemporary translations of the Quran (Elahi Ghomshei, Makarem Shirazi, and Fooladvand). The findings indicate that, through his interpretive approach, Elahi Ghomshei has made a greater effort than the others to resolve semantic ambiguities for the audience, utilizing extratextual factors—such as the occasions of revelation and interpretive points—to provide a translation with minimal ambiguity.
