This study examines the efficacy of symbolism in the poetry collection A Musical Wreath on a Piano Corpse by the poet Jawad al-Hattab. It attempts to transcend descriptive analysis to explore the dimensions of hermeneutic symbolism as a tool for shaping the poet’s existential and political vision. The study is predicated on the hypothesis that symbolism in al-Hattab’s work does not function merely as a traditional literary mask; rather, it evolves into a semiotic mechanism for deconstructing the crises of Iraqi reality in the post-occupation era. Utilizing a descriptive-analytical approach, the research reveals how various symbols (historical, religious, and natural) operate within the textual structure, transforming them from conventional connotations into evocative energies that reshape stances on freedom, resistance, and the fractured self. Furthermore, the study seeks to trace the aesthetic interplay between symbol and myth, thereby reinforcing the text as a narrative space that bridges collective memory with the poet’s profound psychological shifts in response to historical trauma. The study concludes that the efficacy of symbolism in al-Hattab’s work manifests in his ability to embody objective history within a committed poetic subjectivity. This provides the text with a semantic horizon that transcends direct political messaging, elevating it to the level of a complex aesthetic vision.
